At GRRRL Camp, we are very invested in positive role models for girls. Mia Hamm is one of the most often cited examples of a female athlete role model girls had growing up. Although she was clearly incredible, she was one of the few in mainstream media that we could’ve chosen at the time!
The first photo is of the poster I (GRRRL Camp Founder) created as a kid because I couldn’t find female athlete posters to purchase for my room. I cut these images out of Sports Illustrated for Women and a couple of other girl-centered magazines. The second is of the wallpaper trim my mom and I searched tirelessly to uncover because I desperately wanted to see girls playing sports on my walls.
There was something critical missing for me when I realized I couldn’t see the type of woman I wanted to become. It’s important for all girls to have women to look up to, identify with, and emulate. Having more images specifically of female athletes gives girls more opportunities to focus on the virtues of having a strong, functional body instead of focusing on what they wear and how they look.
